The OneFS Operating System – Proven and Tested

At the heart of the Isilon scale-out storage platform is our OneFS Operating System. OneFS combines the three layers of traditional storage architectures – file system, volume manager and RAID – into one unified software layer, creating a single file system that can scale capacity and performance to extraordinary levels.

Unlike simple NAS namespace aggregation products, OneFS is truly distributed and stripes data across all nodes in a cluster (from 3 to 144 nodes in a cluster, ranging in capacity from 6 TB to 10.4 PB) to create a single, shared pool of storage - while implementing a globally coherent shared cache. Parity is created during the write process, and up to N+4 protection levels can be utilized at the directory or file level and easily changed with a single mouse click.

We utilize a private Infiniband network as an intra-cluster communication and synchronization backplane, with symmetric metadata and locking schemes, eliminating the need for dedicated metadata servers. In the case of a drive or storage node failure, rebuild times are less than an hour as only the actual data needs to be rebuilt and is written in parallel across all of the disks in the cluster.
