SmartLock

Policy-based Retention and Protection against Accidental Deletion

SmartLock™ adds a layer of protection which guards your critical data against accidental, premature or malicious alteration or deletion. Because SmartLock is a software-based approach to Write Once Read Many (WORM) solution, you can store SmartLock-protected data alongside other data types with no effect on performance or availability, and without the added cost of purchasing and maintaining specialty WORM-capable hardware. SmartLock’s tight integration with the Isilon OneFS® operating system means it is more efficient than other software-based WORM offerings, easy to use and works seamlessly with other OneFS capabilities like automated storage tiering and local or remote data replication.

With SmartLock data is protected at the directory-level eliminating the wasted space and complexity of managing WORM protections across multiple devices or volumes. Set your defaults retention times once, at the directory-level, and every file committed then carries that default unless you have a special exception. Managing WORM attributes at the directory-level brings several cost and performance advantages: 1) you can mix capacity types to support different access performance characteristics within SmartLock protected data, 2) you don’t have the wasted space and complexity of management of committing data at the volume-level, and 3) the data is organized and ready for replication or backup.
