EMC Isilon SPECsfs2008® Performance Results

World's Fastest NAS Platform

The new Isilon S200 Scale-out NAS Platform — designed for extreme I/O and transactional performance — has set two new “World Records” with the SPECsfs2008® benchmark NFS and CIFS performance tests.

The SPECsfs2008 benchmark is the latest version of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC®) benchmark used to measure file server throughput and response times. It provides a standardized method for comparing performance across different vendor platforms by creating a mixed workload that simulates a typical server environment. The results of the performance test summarize the server’s capabilities with respect to the number of operations that can be handled per second, as well as the overall latency of the operations. In the recent SPECsfs2008 benchmark tests, the Isilon S200 Scale-Out NAS Platform achieved the following world record performance results:

In SPECsfs2008 testing, the Isilon scale-out NAS solution was made up of a 140-nodes EMC Isilon S200, powered by dual quad core Intel Xeon CPUs, 10,000 RPM 2.5-inch Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drive technology and an ultra-high performance solid state drive (SSD), built on top of an intra-cluster communication layer on a QLogic 9120 DDR IB switch, and connected to Dell R610 SPECsfs load generators by a Brocade MLXe32 10GbE router.

Isilon’s linear scalability gives customers the ability to aggregate, store and leverage Big Data, which enables them to:

  • Accelerate Time-to-Market for new products
  • Develop new insights into data stores
  • Be more competitive with their offerings

While Isilon’s S200 Scale-Out NAS platform is capable of achieving record-breaking levels of performance and throughput, the essence of Isilon’s modular architecture design is to provide customers with the ability to start small and grow into larger configurations, while still enjoying the performance and throughput benefits that can only be provided through a scale-out NAS architecture.

"EMC has set another world record with its latest SPECsfs performance benchmark results. With new Isilon S200 platform nodes tuned for IO-intensive applications, EMC recorded more than 1.6 million file operations per second. While a million file operations per second is a really big and impressive number, what’s even more impressive is that it was achieved using a modular architecture that can be used to cost-effectively meet the performance needs of a wide variety of workloads from high performance big data workloads, through primary and secondary storage, to near-line archives—all from a single file system architecture."
